Estrogen dominance is one of the most common hormonal imbalances that women can experience.
Estrogen is crucial to the functioning of your body and is involved with many different processes.
These include bone health, insulin sensitivity, hunger and satiety the metabolism of cholesterol, our menstrual cycle and also our mood.

Symptoms of estrogen dominance
Here are just some of the symptoms of estrogen dominance:
- PMS
- Abnormal menstruation
- Reduced sex drive
- Breast tenderness
- Breast or ovarian fibroids
- Weight gain
- Endometriosis
- Mood swings
- Depression
- Bloating
- Insomnia
- Spider or varicoise veins
- Cellulite
Evidence suggests that estrogen dominance increases your risk of breast cancer – which is the most common cancer among women in the USA.
Estrogen dominance can also lead to uterine cancer, autoimmune diseases, and infertility.
Estogen dominance causes
Some of the reasons why your estrogen can be too high include:
- Taking the pill. Instead look for alternatives to this method as taking the pill is unhealthy for your body.
- A slow transit time, where food takes too long to move through your digestive system and so then allows unwanted estrogen to be reabsorbed back into your body.
- Personal care products that contain unhealthy chemicals.
- Foods contaminated with chemicals/hormones, especially animal products like meat and dairy.
- Poor liver function. The liver is responsible for eliminating excess estrogen.
- Toxins, including heavy metals that affect the natural hormonal balance of your body.
Treating estrogen dominance naturally
The health of your gut is central to your overall health, including your hormonal balance.
For example, if you have leaky gut, excess estrogen will not be properly removed from your body.
Excess estrogen circulating around your body is called estrogen dominance.
This is why it’s crucial to choose a diet that will assist you in the restoration of your gut health, as well as hormonal health.
A whole foods vegan diet that also includes a lot of raw foods is a very important choice to make to help you restore your hormonal health.

I have just listened to your webinar. I have followed you for a while and I know you promote a high fruit diet. I know you have eaten sweet potatoes, etc too. So I would like to try a raw vegan, high fruit diet, but I have high triglycerides (I am already plant based), Drs. McDougall and Esselstyn prefer fruit portions to be limited especially if your triglycerides and LDL are high because fruit can increase triglycerides. What is your opinion of fruit and triglycerides?
