Going on a gluten-free diet has gained more and more popularity as the years have gone by but is it really necessary for your health, including your hormones and gut health?
When it comes to gluten many people think that you should only avoid gluten-containing foods if you suffer from what is called celiac disease to receive any gluten-free diet benefits.
Now celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder, primarily affecting the small intestine, where individuals develop an intolerance to gluten, present in foods such as wheat, rye, and barley.
Classic symptoms include gastrointestinal problems such as chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, malabsorption, headaches, rashes, and loss of appetite.
Even trace amounts of gluten which for instance can contaminate another food that does not normally have gluten in it can happen through manufacturing processes and this can still cause symptoms and health problems for those suffering from celiac disease.
Now in addition to celiac disease, there is also what is called non-celiac gluten sensitivity which is where you can have testing done, including blood tests and they show up negative for celiac disease.
Unfortunately, even with negative test results, you can still experience similar symptoms to someone who suffers from celiac disease, including abdominal pain, bloating, and fatigue.
Gluten Free Diet
This is where there are also benefits from a gluten-free diet for non-celiacs as well who still react to gluten-containing products.
Of course, this can be problematic, and when you are suffering from symptoms like brain fog, stiff joints, and even numbness in your arms, legs, or fingers you really want to get to the bottom of what is happening with your body and the reason or reasons why you are experiencing these symptoms.
Even in someone who is not suffering from celiac disease or from any obvious symptoms of reacting to gluten as a non-celiac, gluten can still potentially harm the lining of your gut by causing it to be too leaky and hence the name leaky gut.
At this point, you might start wondering what foods are gluten-free and begin searching for a gluten-free diet list and then you can simply replace your old gluten-containing foods with non-gluten vegan options.
Why not choose gluten-free vegan bread, gluten-free vegan cake, or other gluten-free vegan recipes?
Well, going gluten-free is a great start but replacing highly processed foods with whole plant foods is a must if you want to achieve optimal health.
