Hashimoto thyroid vegan diet: does a plant foods diet work to balance hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s, or can it make it worst?
Many people are discovering the amazing, scientifically-proven benefits of a vegan diet, but will a Hashimoto thyroid diet work for you?
If you have been diagnosed with Hashimoto thyroid disease, you’ve probably been told by your doctor that it’s an irreversible chronic disease.
Nearly 5 out of 100 Americans aged 12 years and older have hypothyroidism, although most cases are mild or have few obvious symptoms (1).
Women are much more likely than men to develop hypothyroidism. So as you can imagine, there are a lot of women in our world having problems with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s.
Many of them are searching for a solution to help them: so will a Hashimoto thyroid vegan diet work?
Hypothyroidism affects 4% to 10% of women, and this increases with age (2).
Hashimoto disease is the most common cause of hypothyroidism, causing 90% of all cases.
Hashimoto thyroid disease is an autoimmune disorder
This means the immune system is producing antibodies that are affecting the body’s own healthy tissues, which negatively impacts your thyroid gland’s functioning.
If you have Hashimoto thyroid disease, you are at a higher risk of developing other autoimmune disorders and, to a lesser extent, a specific form of thyroid cancer.
One of the main priorities for people with Hashimoto hypothyroidism is lowering inflammation.
Symptoms of Hashimoto thyroid disease
Here are just some of the symptoms that you can experience with this condition:
- Fatigue and sluggishness
- Increased sensitivity to cold
- Low libido
- Constipation
- Pale, dry skin
- A puffy face
- Hair loss
- Hoarse voice
- Unexplained weight gain
- Muscle aches, tenderness, and stiffness
- Excessive or prolonged menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia)
- Depression and anxiety.
- Insulin resistance
- Infertility
You definitely should not ignore a high level of thyroid antibodies and you can actually reverse them through diet and lifestyle changes.
Further to this, studies have shown that plant diets are associated with a reduced risk of thyroid issues.
Diets that contained animal products or omnivore diets were associated with an increased risk of hypothyroidism.
Hashimoto Thyroid Vegan Diet
And what about a Hashimoto thyroid vegan diet?
Diets eliminating animal products have rarely been associated with hypothyroidism and studies have shown (3) that they may protect against autoimmune diseases, including Hashimoto disease.
